The Hon. Lord Mayor Sue Hickey launches the new Trailer for Breeding in Captivity

Yesterday afternoon at 5.30pm the Hon. Lord Mayor Sue Hickey hosted a fundraising event for Breeding in Captivity. During the event the Mayor, Alex Sangston from Screen Tasmania, Lucien Simon and Larelle Bossi spoke passionately about the Tasmanian film Industry and the need to promote Tasmania not just as a fantastic location for films but as a hub of creative and talented filmmakers creating films for the world.

Breeding in Captivity, with your help, can be the first Tasmanian produced film since 1998’s the ‘Sound of One Hand Clapping’ to hit international cinema screens. We, together, can share our unique talent and stories through the release of this film, and, in so doing, open the flood gates to other Tasmanian feature films.

The ACF campaign ends on June 30 and we need you to help us reach our goal of $25,000 either by donating or sharing the below link to the campaign.

LINK: https://australianculturalfund.org.au/projects/breeding-in-captivity/

But for now please enjoy the new trailer.

An Indie Film or a Village

When we set out to make this Tasmanian Feature Film the entire community got behind us. When you look at the amount of people involved it reads more like a village than a film set. In fact;

89 Businesses and Individuals sponsored this film with, wether cash or in-kind support. The sets, the costumes, the cars we used, the locations, the food we ate, the equipment used to film, everything was loaned or provided at a heavily discounted rate. Without local businesses this film would not have been possible.

147 People donated money via our Pozible campaign;

62 Crew members deferred their payments in the development and production of the film; and

181 Actors and Extras deferred their payments to be in the film.

That is, an incredible 479 businesses and individuals involved in a feature film with a shooting cash budget of less than $70,000. It is amazing to think that we were able to feed that many people in the 5 weeks that we shot, let alone pay for all the equipment, flights, accommodation, petrol etc. We think that the support we received is phenomenal and so we are going to start highlighting and celebrating the myriad of people and business who have supported us. Today I’d like you to visit our sponsor page and consider, next time you need furniture, clothing, accommodation, a meal, camera equipment. a good read, belts, jewellery, antiques, sound equipment or anything else you can imagine that you have a look at the supporters of this film and give them some of your business and help promote and grow Tasmanian business and industry.

SPONSOR PAGE

So, we need a little more money to finish this film and show the work and generosity of the almost 500 people who made it. Please help us finish the editing of the film by donating some money via the Australian Cultural Fund and receiving in return a 100% Tax Donation and a credit on the film. For larger donations we can negotiate Associate and Executive Producer credits as well as other benefits like private screenings hosted by the Director.

Everyday since the shoot finished I have been conscious of the need to finish this film for all the people who have supported the making of this film. In fact there has been a phenomenal 378 people and businesses that have gotten behind Breeding in Captivity (that is, 146 Actors, Extras and Crew members deferred payments, 147 people made Pozible Donations and 85 Businesses and Investors provided cash and/or in-kind support).

It is incredible that so many people have believed in this film and that so many people have a personal stake in seeing this film being made. Larelle and I feel an immense gratitude but also are very conscious of the weight and expectation to finish the film and top make it a great film.

In a sense Breeding in Captivity isn’t just a film it is a village, and now, it has come time to, once again, unite as a community so that we can see this film come to fruition and surprise, delight, confront and entertain the greater community.

The bare minimum required to complete the film, enter it into festivals and have a world premier screening in Hobart is $25,000. But we will be using this opportunity to raise more money that this so that we can properly publicise a Nationwide release.

Rather than run a Pozible campaign we have partnered with the Australian Cultural Fund (ACF) because through the ACF donations made out to the film receive a 100% tax deduction.

And yes it is tax time and so now is the time to act. What we need now, from all of you, is help getting the word out about our Australian Cultural Fund campaign.

What we would like is for you to post on Twitter and Facebook the following statements:
Facebook Post:
Help finish Breeding in Captivity and receive 100% tax deduction.
Breeding in Captivity is a Tasmanian produced feature film I worked on in 2012. Finally the film is almost ready for its world premier but we need a little more to finish the sound, music and special effects. Everything is in place and if we raise the money then you can help make Breeding in Captivity be the first Tasmanian produced film in cinemas since 1998. It is a film we can all be proud of and given that you receive 100% tax deduction on donations over $2 I really hope you can support me and the other 250 Tasmanian Actors, crew and businesses gave their time and money to make this film. Thank you.

Also, over the next 70 days of the campaign I will be posting regular articles highlighting individual actors, crewmembers and sponsors, sharing with the world just what an amazing community we are.

Please visit: www.facebook.com.au/breedingincaptivity
regularly and share the posts.

The film is almost completed; we just need to finish the sound mix, sound track, titles and colour grade. The team is in place and has agreed to a schedule that will see the film completed in November of this year (links to their work are below).

It really is exciting. The home stretch beckons.

Dear Breeding in Captivity Team Member

It is with our deep sadness that Larelle and I share the tragic news that Kevin Gleeson, the Location Sound Mixer on Breeding in Captivity, passed away on Wednesday April 20.

For those who are aware Kevin’s contribution on set was phenomenal. Not only did he save the shoot by ensuring quality sound but he worked tirelessly, professionally always with good grace and humour.

A few days before the first day of the shoot we lost our Sound Mixer. Consequently, for the first week of the shoot we had no sound mixer and various Boom Operators, some experienced some just winging it. Quality sound is essential, and we didn’t have it. We were in trouble. Then like bolt of lightening from the blue we got a call from Kevin, who at the time lived in Launceston, and was prepared to shift back to Hobart to take up the Sound Mixer’s role. Once Kevin was on set our problems were solved. He averted a crisis. This ability to avert a crisis and to save the day was something, we came to learn, was part of Kevin’s makeup.

Kevin is much loved within the Hobart community, particularly the music industry where he has nurtured and supported many a talent. Kevin’s achievements and skills are expansive, recording bands, editing animation for Blue Rocket, making videos, making art, making music…

I am sure that you will all support Larelle and my decision to place a dedication to Kevin in the credits of the film. Through this news is tragic it also provides further incentive to complete this amazing project. This is a film I believe Kevin would have been proud of and I would have loved for him to be at the world premier and witness his work on the big screen. He deserved – as we all do- that experience of pride and joy that comes when you see your work finished and appreciated by an audience.

Vale Kevin Gleeson. You will be missed.
